About the Job

Position Summary: The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to advance scientific understanding and predictability of the transport and fate of agricultural trace gases including ammonia, nitrous oxide (its isotopologues and isotopomers), methane, and others. The successful candidate is expected to advance a tall tower trace gas observatory network and co-located lidar network for planetary boundary layer modeling. The successful candidate will lead efforts to develop new long-term observations at other tower sites and to pursue external funding to help expand this inverse modeling network. They will provide leadership with respect to modeling atmospheric transport processes, inverse modeling, and to publish results in a timely manner.

Job Duties:
(10%) Develop workshops and proposal designed to advance inverse modeling of agricultural trace gas emissions
(10%) Present findings at scientific conferences. Organize and administer meetings among collaborative groups
(10%) Combine trace gas measurements, Lidar Observations, and satellite products to advance inverse modeling efforts. Develop new KGML algorithms to advance near real-time a priori emissions.
(70%) Develop collaborative links among atmospheric scientists in the United States and Canada to advance atmospheric transport modeling. Publish results in scientific journals in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Completion PhD in atmospheric science or related discipline. The work performed in this project will be related to environmental and atmospheric measurements and using atmospheric transport modeling to estimate the regional budgets of trace gas emissions including nitrous oxide and methane. The ability to use sophisticated inverse modeling techniques and Lagrangian transport modeling is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. degree with a focus in atmospheric sciences, micrometeorology, or related discipline with one or more years of research training. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be a significant asset: trace gas measurements, biogeochemical modeling, chemical transport modeling, and hands on experience with the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF or WRF-Chem). The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently lead research projects and publish in peer-review journals

About the Department

The Biometeorology group at the University of Minnesota has an opening for a Research Level 5 position. The successful candidate will help lead an interdisciplinary team to advance scientific understanding of the transport and fate of agricultural trace gases including nitrous oxide (its isotopologues and isotopomers), and methane. This project will use state-of-the-art trace gas measurement techniques at 6 tall towers, a lidar network for monitoring PBL dynamics, and inverse modeling techniques to estimate regional nitrous oxide and methane budgets for the US Corn Belt. There will also be opportunities to collaborate within the AI-Climate Institute at the University of Minnesota to advance inverse modeling using KGML techniques.

This position is part of the Griffis Lab in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate in CFANS on the St. Paul, MN campus of the University of Minnesota.
