Necropsy Technician - CVM

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide a wide variety of routine technical laboratory support for the Anatomic Pathology unit
  • Serve as initial contact and may serve as technical reference to veterinary pathologists, residents, students, staff and research investigators for within specific area/specialty
  • Appropriately receive animals to the unit and assist with daily necropsy setup procedures.
  • Assist with, and perform prosection on small and large animals under the direction of a veterinary pathologist
  • Perform post-necropsy procedures, to include preparing carcasses for safe disposal, and work area disinfection
  • Trim various tissues collected during biopsy and necropsy procedures for processing by the histology laboratory for an interpretation by a veterinary pathologist
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a science related field and up to two years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two to three years of experience working in a diagnostic or research Histopathology/Necropsy facility
  • Strong background in anatomy
  • Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) training

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

Anatomic Pathology (AP) offers comprehensive diagnostic services including post-mortem examination, histopathology, biopsy evaluation, and diagnostic immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization. They expertly process and evaluate specimens from a wide range of species at the request of veterinarians to aid in the identification of injury and disease that can threaten the life of a single animal or an entire population.
