Job Summary and Responsibilities

Summary: The Traffic Control Specialist maintains a safe work area on highways, municipal roads, rights-of-way, and rural roads. They are responsible for regulating and directing traffic to keep it moving safely and smoothly. Under the general direction of the Traffic Control Supervisor, Traffic Control Agents are essential to keeping drivers and pedestrians safe on the road.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Setting up and maintaining traffic control devices such as cones, signs, barricades, and flagging materials to redirect or slow down traffic in construction area.
  • Directing traffic using hand signals, flags, or other approved methods to ensure the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Monitoring traffic flow and adjusting traffic control measures as necessary to maintain a smooth and safe traffic pattern.
  • Providing clear and concise instructions to drivers to navigate through the work zone and avoid potential hazards.
  • Communicating with construction crews, law enforcement, and other personnel to coordinate traffic control efforts and ensure everyone's safety.
  • Reporting any traffic incidents, accidents, or unsafe conditions to appropriate authorities or supervisors.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and repair of traffic control devices when needed.
  • Following all applicable safety regulations and guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries.
  • Maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with the public, answering questions, and addressing concerns.


Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and/or QUALIFICATIONS

  • Traffic Control Certification is required
  • 2 years of traffic control experience is desired
  • CDL desired
  • Valid Driver's license required
  • Familiarity with traffic laws
  • High School degree or equivalent required
  • Ability to work in various outdoor environments, in all weather conditions, and to adapt to shifting schedules
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
