Rock Deformation Lab Junior Specialist

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position Rock Deformation Junior Specialist. Under the direction of Professor Heather Savage, the junior specialist will contribute to a research program focused on earthquakes and faults that uses laboratory experiments and field studies to improve the understanding of when and where larger earthquakes occur.

Responsibilities will include running and maintaining rapid heat apparatus, using ball mill and sieves to prepare size fractions of rock samples, assembling the rapid heater apparatus reactor with appropriate samples, and plot data from heating experiments in MATLAB. Duties will also include using UCSC Environmental & Health lab safety techniques and ASTM standards to avoid contamination, ensure proper use of chemicals to clean and prep rapid heat reactor assembly for organics testing, and assist lab mates with solvent extractions of organic material from rapid heating rock samples.

Applicants with research experience with high pressure plumbing systems, rapid heating apparatus and hydrous pyrolysis, and Labview software are highly encouraged to apply.

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in earth science or related field.
• Demonstrated experience with MATLAB.
• Demonstrated experience in a rock mechanics lab.
