Overview:

We are seeking an Senior Electronic Designer to design, build, and maintain beamline electrical systems, including motion control and specialized sample environments (e.g., cryogenically cooled superconducting magnets, high-pressure cells, and temperature-controlled settings). This role offers an opportunity for a highly skilled technician to gain experience in motion control, complex sample environments, and various control interfaces. Additionally, you'll support the networking and computing infrastructure for beamlines.

As part of our team, you will work closely with other group members and interface with external scientific users, instrument scientists, and scientific associates at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). You will also work with other technical groups including sample environment, information systems, instrument operations, and the detector group.

This position resides in the DAQ Hardware Group in the Neutron Instrument Technologies Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the preparation of complex drawings and assembly/test instructions, including chassis design, advanced mounting hardware, and wiring diagrams for sophisticated electrical, electronic systems, and light mechanical fabrications.

  • Provide expert-level technical guidance and oversight to bargaining unit staff during the fabrication of assemblies for instrument control systems, ensuring accuracy, adherence to specifications, and troubleshooting advanced issues.

  • Oversee procurement and manage inventory of critical assemblies, components, and cables.

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and mentor team members in diagnostic techniques.

  • Lead the assembly and design of prototype platforms and test stands.

  • Support routine maintenance procedures as well as new instrument installations.

  • Ensure compliance with work control and preventative maintenance procedures.

  • Provide high-level operational support for Instrument Data Acquisition and Controls systems, driving system improvements.

  • This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the HFIR and SNS.

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in electronics or related field with 7 or more years of proven experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Expertise in preparing layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

  • Proficient in interpreting manufacturer data sheets and technical documents.

  • Skilled in creating, interpreting, and following test procedures.

  • A working knowledge of various types of test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, arbitrary function generators, as well as experience with basic hand and power tools.

  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Creo, or SolidWorks.

  • Experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Familiarity with motion control, PID control, ladder logic.

  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and the Linux Operating Systems.

  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Galil and Parker controllers.

  • Basic soldering skills.

  • Experience working at a National Laboratory or a scientific research facility.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
