Overview
The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences at Utah State University is seeking applicants for a Supervisor I. This position will assist the management of personnel and operation of the small-animal laboratory animal core within the Institute for Antiviral Research (IAR). The successful candidate will help oversee the daily operations, management, and staffing of animal studies. This person will also ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the animal facilities and associated laboratories (BSL2, BSL3, and Select Agent) and the safe use of equipment and facilities. The Supervisor I reports to the Laboratory Manager, Director of IAR and IAR Faculty/Principal Investigators (PI)s. The position supervises and trains student technicians and full- and part-time technical staff on animal care and experimentation.

Responsibilities
  1. Assists the Lab Manager in overseeing and managing student technicians in the day-to-day technical, educational, and research support activities conducted in the animal laboratory.
  2. Helps supervise the lab animal research core technician group.
  3. Conducts weekly lab meetings to coordinate scheduling, work allocation, training, and problem resolution.
  4. Will assist in the training and enforcement of safety and Select Agent security standards.
  5. Conducts training on new animal techniques or technologies as needed.
  6. Resolves problems and issues as they arise.
  7. Conducts orientation training for students and part-time employees on properly using equipment, materials, and supplies using established protocols.
  8. Performs lab animal experiments according to written protocols, including infections and treatment of laboratory rodents with antiviral drugs and vaccines.
  9. Performs necropsies, minor surgeries, and various in vitro lab assays.
  10. Researches and recommends parts and supplies for the maintenance of the animal facilities and associated laboratories used by the IAR.
  11. Performs or supervises routine and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment; ensures proper care in using and maintaining equipment, materials, and supplies; performs periodic safety checks.
  12. Investigates emerging technologies and makes recommendations for implementation.
  13. Maintains policies regarding the safe use of animal facilities and equipment:
  14. Maintains accurate records and databases.
  15. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Three years of related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, organization, leadership, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years of laboratory animal research experience.
  • One year of leadership experience.
  • BS degree in a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to lead, manage, and inspire people.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and define and solve problems.
  • Skilled in examining and adjusting operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce animal, lab, and infectious agent safety procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures specified by equipment/supply manufacturers.
  • Ability to evaluate the cost of supplies and develop cost-effective measures.
  • Ability to perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
