The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for over six decades. SDL's internship program provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to get involved with state-of-the art technologies in space-, airborne-, and ground-based systems. With the support of engineers and mentors, Interns will work on professional-level assignments that complement their academic studies. The program also includes training workshops, networking opportunities, and a variety of summer events and activities.Interns will be paid a competitive hourly wage and will be tasked with varying duties based on current projects, needed support, and development phase.
The Military Space Division is seeking a graduate student Electro-Optical Scientist/Engineer to support the Quantum Sensing and Timing (QST) program for the Air Force Research Laboratory (ARFL) located at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM.This position will support efforts to develop optical methods to enhance the readout of MEMS accelerometers. Work will include building an optical measurements system and characterizing the timing and phase noise of system components. Potential duties may include test and operation of digital RF synthesizers and low-noise lasers, digital signal processing and data analysis.
This position has the potential of continued employment or transition to student/full-time employment requiring security clearance eligibility.
Requirements
- Experience or understanding of at least one of the following areas: Free-space optics, fiber-optics, lasers
- Ability to work hands-on assembling and testing hardware
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work closely with a professional team
- Strong initiative and able to see the job through
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance
Desired/Useful Qualifications:
- Experience in electro-optics, electronics, microwave photonics, integrated photonics, optical metrology or digital-signal processing
Education
- Currently studying Optical Science, Physics or Electrical Engineering
- Graduate student: Masters or Ph.D.
- 3.0 GPA minimum is required
